The ideal home
1 April 2019Space clearing: how can we eliminate the superfluous?
We get rid of the superfluous by giving it a second life, we will travel lighter and have fewer things to take care of: we do space clearing.
This time of year we are generally more eager for change, which is always opportunity. So this is the right time of year to talk to you about space clearing and decluttering, or the art of letting go of everything that is superfluous, unnecessary, overabundant. One piece of advice I give you is to go into your homes, or stores and offices, as if you were wearing a new pair of glasses.
Look around and try to figure out if the objects around you are still important, useful, fundamental, and make sense of your home.
Often we don't imagine anything different; we keep certain objects or furniture because we have grown accustomed to seeing them. We don't even wonder if they could be donated to a second life....
Then one exercise you could do perhaps with your children is to get two boxes: one with 'to be discarded' written on it and one box with items 'to be donated'.
The fact that you can donate the things we no longer use will make it much easier for you to part with those items.
Another exercise you could do is to go around your space every day and discard at least two items a day, for a week. Eventually you will be surprised at how many things you were able to eliminate. But this tour of your home will also allow you to give more value to the things you really care about instead, memories to keep perhaps in a box dedicated to Treasures, a special box that is just as important as the objects it is supposed to contain.
